9. Dharmesh Shah, Hubspot

The intersection of marketing and technology is one of the most fascinating fields today, experiencing nothing short of a modern Renaissance. In these exciting and tumultuous times, the most inspiring figures are Renaissance men and women who combine deep technical talents with visionary marketing savvy. Dharmesh embodies that ideal to the hilt -- a brilliant technologist and a brilliant marketer.
He's also an entrepreneur's entrepreneur. HubSpot, the company he founded and still leads as Chief Software Architect, is one of the pioneers of social media marketing software, having raised over $30 million and acquired more than 2,000 customers worldwide. Dharmesh and his team defined "inbound marketing," which has become one of the central concepts in digital marketing today. Dharmesh and his co-founder, Brian Halligan, literally wrote the book on inbound marketing (published by Wiley in 2009). Their suite of Grader.com tools help marketers around the world monitor and implement best practices with their web sites, Facebook, Twitter, and more.
Dharmesh also writes the popular blog On Startups, offering excellent advice to people launching and running new businesses. Over the past several years, the On Startups community has expanded with a great LinkedIn group, a large Facebook following, and a new Answers.OnStartups.com site for collaborative Q&A among entrepreneurs.
On top of all his accomplishments -- of which I've barely scratched the surface -- Dharmesh is an all-around good person, genuinely doing his best to make the world a better place. I have tremendous admiration for him, and I'm thrilled to see him recognized as one of the Top 10 Marketers for 2009.
